''Before Cheliax turned its greedy gaze northward to the untamed wilds beyond the shadow-state of Nidal; before the eighty-seven centuries of barbarism and stagnation which smothered the north-west of Avistan even after the Age of Darkness lifted from the world; before Earthfall and the sinking of Azlant and the shrouding of Golarion in a thousand years of post-cataclysmic gloom; ten thousand years ago, in an age undreamed of, there was Thassilon.''

''Sprawling across the lands that would one day be called Varisia, the Hold of Belkzen, and the territories of the Linnorm Kings, Thassilon began as the bastard child of Azlant, a colony of exiles and renegades cast upon the shores of Avistan. From these beginnings it grew into a mighty empire than spanned seven kingdoms, plumbed the unknown depths of rune magic, and raised towering monuments to its own greatness, before the cataclysm of Earthfall laid Thassilon low.''

''Today, Thassilon endures only in the rune-carved and strangely resilient ruins that dot Varisia, from the Grand Mastaba upon which Castle Korvosa stands, to the shattered bridge of the Irespan around which the city of Magnimar sprawls. For all of its triumphs and the great ambitions of its rulers, the Empire of Sevenfold Sins has crumbled before disaster and the passage of the ages, its achievements noted only in the treatises of reclusive sages, otherwise lost to history.''

''But the glories of the Age of Enthronement have faded, and in the present Age of Lost Omens, a twilight of uncertainty and sundered prophecy creeps upon the world. The shadows of Thassilon have grown long, and the rise of the Runelords has begun...''

==Session 14: In which our heroes rescue the surviving crew of the Mare Vitae==

The party continued their exploration of the Mare Vitae. They tried to use drones, but with the heavy shielding of the Mare Vitae, they quickly lost contact with the first drone and decided to explore in person. The party descended from the first lift to a second and then a third. The second had the recordings of the crew, and the third had the remains of one of the crew whose leg had been bitten off by a large creature. Careful study revealed that the crew member was the engineer Jenker, that the lift had been partially flooded for some period of time, that Jenker had been wearing an oxygen tank but only used one of eight hours of the supply.

Descending to the body of the main ship, they found a cable box and two large pools of water full of plants and fish. The whole area had, at some point been submerged. In the cable box, the power cable had been disconnected. The others provide connections to various jump and manoeuvre drives, the power plant, an alpha computer, life support, and internal communications. The party established that the alpha computer could connect to the other systems, reconnected it, the life support, and the communications. Using the connection to the alpha computer, they found a schematic for the ship and discovered that there was a third, larger pool, and a shark.

They followed an unflooded tunnel to the location of the alpha computer, which also housed a super advanced sensor suite. They saw that in most of the flooded, internal observation stations the windows had fallen out, so that pumps could not remove the water. Although the alpha computer was in the middle of the C compartment, the party realised that there was no apparent route from it to the rest of the compartment, and that any apparent route would involve opening a door which would flood a previously unflooded room and risk flooding the power plant. The party then decided to take an unapparent route by smashing down in internal, TL 12, transparent wall. It took Davon several careful swings against the wall to break it, but eventually he did, allowing the party access to an open pool. Davon and Artesia dived into the water, descended lower into the ship, traversed flooded corridors, and eventually reached the door to the cryoberths. Here, the shark prepared to ambush them. However, with his military tactics, Davon allowed the party to act before the shark swam in through the observation room window, and immediately obliterated the shark with a barrage of fragmentation grenades. Protected from the flechettes by heavy armour and some distance of water, Davon and Artesia shrugged off the effects of the grenade.

At this point, the M-drives sprang to life. Feidlimid went to investigate the junction box, Artesia went back to watch the M-drive, and Davon prepared to enter the cryoberths and revive any survivors. Feidlimid found that the Mare Vitae was plunging towards gas giant, despite Bravo's denials. The main lift rose and then descended again, and Bravo failed to explain this convincingly, causing Feidlimid to fear an ambush. When the lift doors opened, Feidlimid obliterated the probe drone within with his Gauss rifle, but was then immediately knocked unconscious, when Bravo stepped round from the concealed corner of the lift and fired with his stunner. Artesia and Davon were isolated from this, but able to contact each other directly with comms signals passing through an internal wall. Artesia went up to the bridge to investigate and was also ambushed and stunned. Bravo put Feidlimid in a vacc suit and then jettisoned each character into space.

Davon revived the two other crew members, led them up to the bridge, and was also attacked by Bravo. Bravo's armour allowed it to shrug off Davon's Gauss pistol shots, and Davon's battle dress allowed him to shrug off Bravo's stunner shots. Davon drew his broad sword and cut Bravo's robotic body down with a few quick blows. The rescued crew were able to shut down the computer running Bravo, regained control of the ship, and were able to scoop up Feidlimid and Artesia.

===Further things===
The Mare Vitae was intended both to research jump scars and to investigate long-term self-sufficiency for a ship. General construction had made at least two major errors in the construction of the experimental ship, the Mare Vitae. First, a flaw in the hull caused it eventually to leak. Although the water only jetted out briefly before it froze, the jet of water shook the ship violently, causing various parts to become flooded. Second, water pressure was used to keep the observation windows in place, so that once the observation rooms flooded, the windows fell out, and it was no longer possible for the pumps to remove the water. Once large parts of the ship were flooded, the shark was able to eat several of the crew members. In addition, Bravo, although programmed not to harm the crew, was programmed to try to destroy the evidence of a potential failure of the ship and thwarted the surviving crew in their attempts to do anything else. While the ship was still flooded and water was moving around erratically, the engineer Jenker went to the lifts and disconnected Bravo from the rest of the ship but was attacked by the shark after doing so and fled to the lift. The surviving crew managed to get from the sensors, through the engine room, a passage, and a flooded observation room to the cryoberths. In doing so, they flooded the corridor and the cryoberth room. With no windows, the cryoberth room could be pumped in a few minutes, allowing the survivors to freeze themselves. Unable to communicate with the main part of the ship, Bravo created the recording to mislead anyone else investigating, to warn itself not to descend further into the ship, and to alert itself that something had gone badly wrong but that the crew had not been enthusiastic about scuttling the ship; it then destoyed its long-term memory to conceal much of the evidence of what had happened.

The biologist Toy Hia had been particularly committed to investigating the possibility of maintaining a long-term, self-sufficient life support. She had refused to leave the ship and insisted the other crew carefully recorded what they eat and drank off the ship. General construction both had their experimental ships designed to conceal failings and hired private investigators generally to cause trouble for anyone investigating their ships. One of the party's many enemies, Guy Castle, was such an investigator and particularly committed to persuading thugs of the potential profit to be made in attacking the party.

==Session 13: In which the party find the Mare Vitae and sinister clues about what might have happened==

The party had seven passengers: an imperial ambassador Ambassador Rone Wardez- and three more of his entourage, and three zealots from Haunt. The ambassador and his entourage had arranged landing permission on Haunt and were trying to negotiate improved trade and travel rights in Haunt, including the creation of a refueling station. The ambassador and his entourage said the imperial diplomatic core found the navy often made their work more difficult, since naval vessels intimidated governments. The conversation turned to the Mare Vitae. One of the ambassador's entourage -Anien Grigan- said there were rumours linking the Mare Vitae to the navy and that it had military-grade sensors, and that these had provoked fears that the Mare Vitae was a naval spy ship and that the navy was planning to use the fears of piracy as an excuse to invade systems in the Little Rift. Feidlimid reported rumours that the navy had ships built using alien technology, and Anien replied that rumours were that the Mare Vitae was one such ship.

The zealots had contracted space SARS and exposed the party and the ambassador's entourage to it. The party shrugged it off, and Davon Rushmore easily treated the outbreak of this unknown disease. Davon also found that the zealots had signs of being whipped on their hands and elsewhere. The official religion on Haunt had various levels of initiation, with major parts of its beliefs concealed to initiates of sufficiently high rank, although it was acknowledged that there was some connection to aliens and that those in the Haunt sector had a special role to play.

After arriving in the Haunt sector, Artesia eventually was able to find the Mare Vitae in orbit around the second gas giant, inside a strong magnetic field and inside a mega jump scar. Before going to investigate it, the party landed, delivered their passengers, allowed their ship to be thoroughly searched, and listened to the very basic levels of indoctrination that were broadcast openly. Feidlimid failed to obtain permission to send a postcard but convinced Berton Grighte to try to send it for him.

The party then flew to the Mare Vitae. They refueled and attempted to plot a course so they could immediately jump to safety, but being close to the gas giant and in the mega jump scar made such astrogation impossible.

The Mare Vitae consisted of a stream-lined ring which rotated rapidly on a pair of spokes around a small central axle on which a command module and small cargo bay sat. The command module had a basic sensor suite, and a much more powerful suite sat on the outer ring. The ring rotated about once every two seconds, which would be sufficient to create normal gravity from centrifugal force rather than standard artificial gravity. The location of the engines suggested that the ship flew in the plane of the ring, with the command module sitting just slightly above the top of the ring. The command module had two turrets, each with a sandcaster and a beam laser. The command module had a standard sized airlock, and the cargo bay seemed large enough for small craft to fly into.

The party docked with the command module, using their ships power to power the airlock. Inside, the found an android built to resemble a hazardous environment suit on the ships bridge. As soon as it met them, it turned on the power to the bridge. It had been inside a survival tent, which had been set up over a floor-to-ceiling aquarium with 10 gold fish. The android said its name was Bravo, that it was the interface for the ship's computer, and agreed with the party that this did seem to suggest there was another computer system. Further discussion and investigation revealed that Bravo only had 12 hours of memory and that it had no information about the ship outside the bridge, connector, and cargo bay. When asked about this and other strange things on the ship, Bravo agreed that, after the topics had been raised, they did seem concerning. The party connected Bravo to a computer so that it could start to record more than 12 hours of memory. Feidlimid sent Theresa to investigate the cargo bay, which was about half full with sand, probe droids and their atmospheric landers, and an air raft. The party found reference to emergency cryoberths in section C. The cargo bay, middle of the axel and connector, and the cargo bay were labelled as sections Z, Y, and X respectively. After some convincing that the party recognised they didn't own the ship and that there were potentially unknown dangers in the other sections of the ship, Bravo agreed to help the party reach the main part of the ship. They took the lift to section Y, where the artificial gravity seemed to work very hard to maintain something like normal gravity while, perhaps, the lift started to spin rapidly. As the door started to open, it immediately closed again. An electronic broadcast from within had sent a message that there was danger and instructions to return to the bridge. Feidlimid and Brvo debated the merits of opening the door or returning to the bridge, but Bravo opened the door when Davon tried to force it. Inside, the party found a small transmitter transmitting the text message essentially instantaneously and also transmitting audio recordings, transcripts of which are here:

==Session 11: In which the party continue their investigation on Seraph B==
Present: Davon, Atesia, Feidlimid

The party bought some additional gear. Having reread the life support rules, we retroactively ruled that the additional fuel tank was two tons larger than previously agreed.

The party scanned the jump crystal and found, as is widely known, that it is 95% water and almost 5% carbon, with traces of other elements, which, to the best of the GM's knowledge, is within the wide range of common compositions for comets. It was composed of large, fairly high quality ice crystals

The party asked about the Mare Vitae and used the station's computer systems to find records, including flight paths within the sector. The party learned the following:

* The records in Seraph A about arrivals and departures for the Mare Vitae match those the party received on Mirage.
* Most people on A arrived after Mare Vitae left, since the station is new.
* Many reported that the crew of the Mare Viate were aloof, and reject proposals to join the new station.
* Someone says the ship occasionally shared messages. The crew of the Mare Vitae were cagey about sharing data but also erratic. There were several days when they sent their entire raw data feed from the monolith or from the jump scar, but their outgoing comms didn’t seem to be able to keep up. They sent some scans from other sectors. They sent a bunch of random stuff. Michy Coxand and Chrothia Roberts said it was very important to make back ups and share their data before sending some large sections shortly before leaving.
* The amount of data the Mare Vitae seemed to have on the jump crystal and the mega jump scars was colossal. In violation of standard Traveller rules, the data took computer rating. The few days' worth of data in Seraph A took 2 rating.
* The scans revealed that the Mare Vitae's sensors are at least "Very Advanced", certainly better than that for certain tasks, and simply better across the board.
* Someone says the Mare Vitae was heavily shielded. It was about 1000 tons. This confirmed what Bliss Large reported in session 7. (The GM thought that this had also been confirmed in session 9 on Spinning Skull, but I can't currently find a record of this.)
* Someone says the crew rarely joined the other ships, despite visiting the system twice for several weeks. Most, but not all of the crew came down occasionally. Those that did seemed friendly enough, but they were always taking pictures of their meals and sending them back to the ship. Galen and Raha -the drifters- were particularly known for this. Louis Morganz, the biologist, never came to the station.

The party then jumped to Spirit. Local news reported that 2 weeks prior, pirates had attacked another Free Trader "The Rice Carrier", and some weeks earlier, pirates had attacked another ship, "Carthage". They sold their e-bikes (advanced vehicles) and frozen cows. They bought air-rafts and textiles for trade. Local custom required 1 percent of the value of the trades be spent on feasting. This came to almost kCr100, enough to provide days of feasting for the entire planet's population.

The party then made a mortgage payment and jumped to Banshee. (Sale of goods was handled this session, although this was slightly retconned at the beginning of the next session.)

==In which the party demonstrate the effect of grenades in enclosed spaces==
Present: Davon, Artesia, Feidlimid

The party arrived in Banshee, a tech-level 5 (1950s) with few laws and dominated by oligarchs. The planet lacks water and has only a thin atmosphere, so the few million inhabitants mostly lived in city districts that were enclosed in large concrete blocks. Soon after their arrival, the party was bombarded with radio calls from hotels, rum distilleries, and casinos urging the party to land. However, only one station had the license and equipment to sell fuel, so the party landed there.

Upon arrival, the party crossed the jetway into the class D port, and a goon in a suit invited them through some back stairs to a private bar. In the bar, the party met the oligarch controlling the starport, Heria Ramons, and the captain of the orbital naval base, Captain Vance Holtz. Ramons and Holtz say the party are welcome to visit the planet briefly, to enjoy the local amenities, and to trade. Captain Vance Holtz warned the party not to create trouble, not to act as they had on Jevgeia or Zhi Ren, and not to ask about the Mare Vitae. Captain Holtz warned that nearby systems had been hit by pirates, but the pirates didn't make attacks in Banshee because of the naval base. Despite this, the party checked the starport's records and found the Mare Vitae had visited on the dates they had previously been told, but not since.

Feidlimid starts wondering around with MCr.5 in a duffle bag for walking-around money. The party connected the ships comms to the local telephone network. Not only was the planets economy dominated by rum distilleries and casinos, but also the locals seemed to view off worlders as a source of good luck, explaining why the party had been bombarded by establishments trying to attract them. The party sold their vehicles and textiles from Seraph and some cybernetics from an earlier planet. They bought some new trade goods, but they were only able to attract 4 low passengers and 1 midpassenger, a priestess of an alien worshiping religion.

The party had heard that in addition to rum distilleries and casinos, Banshee was home to some old, alien temples. Further investigation revealed that "old" merely meant several hundred years and that "alien" meant for the worship of aliens, the idea of aliens, or the idea of contact with aliens, but not that the temples were build by aliens. The temples had been built 400 years ago, when the planet was tech-level 14. The main temple one was called the floating pyramid. The party drove several hours to visit it. The old TL 14 temple area had an enclosed environment, although there was no visible barrier holding it in, so the party did not need environmental suits. It consisted of an inverted pyramid several hundred meters across floating in the air, with various antigrav corridors allowing visitors to float to the top and then float down again. A number of large rock cubes hung in positions beneath the pyramid, but, in a couple places, the antigrav paths were slightly deficient and ropes and chains had been hung from floating pyramid. What was once the planet's second largest temple was now called "the rad pit"; the party did not investigate further. A number of other temples existed but the party did not investigate.

After driving back to the capital city, Howl, Feidlimid's robot butler reported that a nameless caller had left a message saying he had important information related to the Mare Vitae and about why the party had been attacked on Mirage. The caller told the party to bring MCr3 and to meet at 9 in a bar on the other end of Howl. Suspicious, the party went, but armed and armoured.

Shortly after the party arrived in the dive, the barkeeper surreptitiously made a call to report their arrival. Feidlimid's surveillance drone reported a van rapidly approaching. Feidlimid went to ask the barkeeper about the call, as the van pulled up. The side door on the van popped open to reveal two men with gauss rifles, a third with a rocket launcher, plus the driver. One of the men managed to get out of the van before Davon launched a stun grenade through the dive's front window and into the back of the van from the shoulder mounted grenade launcher in his battle dress. If I recall correctly, the two in the back of the van were immediately knocked unconscious, the gunman outside was protected, and the driver managed to dive beneath the driver's seat. Then, Artesia walked shot the remaining gunman with a stunner, and Feidlimid shot the driver with a stunner while he was trying to get back in the driver's seat and drive away. My recollection is that the goons didn't get to do anything, but if they had fired a rocket into the back of the dive, Artesia's armour would have allowed her to keep fighting and Davon's Battle Dress would have prevented him taking any damage.

The party waited for the police to arrive and arrest the thugs. They found the barkeeper and many of the customers had fled. Feidlimid paid a remaining waitress Cr2000 to cover the cost of a new window. The party were questioned for a couple hours by the police but then let go. The party then returned to the ship. Feidlimid called Captain Holtz and left a message saying his goons had failed. The robot butler reported that, the same caller had left a message shortly after 9 saying something had gone wrong and he wouldn't be able to make the meeting. He had called a second time to arrange another meeting, and the party insisted on meeting in the starport.

The party met the informant. He said his name was Damien Takach. He dropped his price from MCr3 to MCr1. He said that after getting paid, he planned to fly off world to avoid the dangerous people behind the attack on the party. Some difficult persuade rolls and some talk suggesting the party would pay the million credits, convinced Damien to rush on to the Logan Carpenter, and the party quickly jumped to void sector 0703.

The party engaged in trade on Shimmer. The party made just over Cr100,000 and then spent almost all of their money on a large shipment of advanced electronics. Since this planet had about 25000 AI citizens and just 15000 humans, it seemed like a good place to buy cheap electronics. Feidlimid arranged for him and Davon to hold a radio interview. Despite some obvious half-truths, the fundamental righteousness and persuasiveness (or was at a different skill) of Feidlimid managed to win the support of the honour-bound listeners. The party found that the Mare Vitae had jumped here, refueld at the gas giant, and then quickly departed.

Despite the low population, the party was able to recruit a group of four Followers of the Xenopaclypse. The followers tried to convince the party that extragalactic aliens had seeded the galaxy with life so that it could be harvested, that these aliens will soon return to harvest all of humanity, and that this should be celebrated because it is glorious to finally achieve one's purpose. The followers wanted to be taken to the jump crystal (aka monolith) in Seraph. The party found that the Mare Vitae had jumped here, refueld at the gas giant, and then quickly departed again.

The party jumped to Cherub, the first of a sequence of tiny, participatory democracies. Here, they found a small mining community. After speaking to the minister of information, the party managed to find a trader, who was desperate for advanced electronics to scan the nearby asteroid belt for radioactives and paid the party the colossal sum of Cr22,000,000. The party bought some more goods and departed.

The party successfully jumped to Seraph B, a starport just over a hundred diameters from the mega jump scar region which contains the jump crystal. The refueled and engaged in trade. They found that the station was only about a year old, that extended stays inside the jump scar seemed to require extensive shielding to prevent some form of contamination, and that the Mare Vitae had arrived and departed at the times on the manifest that the party had previously been given. The Mare Vitae had spent most of its time near the jump crystal.

The party then spent a few days flying to Seraph A, a heavily shielded station near the jump crystal. This station was about two years old, although it was still under going extensive construction. Most ships seemed to have individual docks which were being fitted with shielding. Before the party started investigating the Mare Vitae, Davon and Feidlimid went to the TAS station, where they met some traders and bought a suit of TL 14 battle dress. Artesia went to visit the scout station.

==House Rules==

===Rule set:===
This will use Studio 2's 2014 version of the Mongoose Traveller rules.

In certain cases, we will also refer to the SRD:
http://www.traveller-srd.com

===General:===
Endurance will be called Constitution.

===Character Creation:===

All alien races are not available. All psionics are not available.

The personal development tables are not allowed.

For the nobility profession, qualification requires a roll of Soc 10+ or Soc score 12 (not 10), and the advancement rolls for Administrators, Diplomats, and Dillettantes are Edu 8+, Soc 7+, Int 9+.

Science is a single skill with 4 specialisations: life sciences, physical sciences, social sciences, and space sciences. Uniquelly for this skill, skills of 3 or higher must be in a subspecialty. Additional subspecialties can be taken for one skill point for each rank beyond 2.

Analgathics are removed from the universe.

The gambling skill does not provide a bonus on benefit rolls. Those with the gambling skill can roll gamblng 8+ for an roll cash on the money table for one of their professions.

The party cannot start with more than 60% share in a ship.

===Computers===
First, perhaps a clarification not a change, an intelligent interface is sufficient for a computer user to use expert systems, and an intellect is assumed to have the necessary interface for it to use an expert system. Second, in a similar vein, an intellect program counts as an intelligent interface for a user trying to gain the benefit of an expert system. Third, in contradiction to the printed rules, although intellects are sufficiently advanced to use expert systems, they do not have human-like intelligence, are unable to do much more than access expert systems, and are easily confused.

===The ship's locker===
The rules state that "the contents of the locker are defined only when they need to be but always contains [sic] vacc suits and other useful items" but "it is a tool to simplify bookkeeping, nothing more". I'm going to interpret this as follows. Money needs to be put into the ships locker with, preferably, a description of the type of things being stored. If you spend a couple thousand on weapons, you can assume there's your choice of shotguns and autopistols for everyone and maybe an assault rifle or gauss pistol. If you spend a 10,000, you can assume there's high TL stunners and ACRs for the players and enough shotguns for the passengers if the ship gets boarded. If you spend mid 5 digits, you can assume you've got a good supply of laser rifles for the party, plus stunners and a bunch of other weapons for the party and passengers. Something similar would apply for sensors, toolkings, medical supplies, and protective gear. If the party has maintained a healthy balance, has been in reasonable TL markets, and suddenly needs something life saving -such as a vacc suit for an engineer or antivenom for a poisoned character- that wasn't mentioned previously, then we can simply deduct the cost and assume it was previously purchased. Conversely, if the party is in a starport, I'll expect players to go buy it.

===The law: checks, bans on landing, bans on tech and autarky===
Page 174 gives rules for when travellers will be checked or investigated. On first approaching a system, a check will be made and investigations will be made for each of the appropriate restrictions for which the party failed a check. This goes someway to providing rules for smuggling. In general, Travellers shipping banned goods can dock but must declare their goods and will have to make investigation rolls upon arrival and departure.

Starports have both docks on their starport and automated refineries. In this sector (and somewhat in violation of the rules as written), systems banning travellers (which Gavin has marked with an X) will still allow ships to dock with automated refineries to refuel.

The ban on tech (again possibly in violation of the rules as written) is interpreted as a ban on off-world technology. Since Traveller is set in the space 1970s, the ban is based on either a policy of autarky (an attempt to have the system become self-sufficient) or merely import-substitution development (an attempt to move up the TL ladder by protecting domestic producers from external competition). Thus, on a TL 8 world that bans TL 3 technology will still have orbital stations and allow its inhabitants to use advanced computers, air rafts, and panaceas that are produced in the shystem but will not allow travellers to sell anything other than things like basic consumables and raw materials.

===The law: checks again===
Law checks need to be made daily and upon arrival. Even though my reading of the rules is that a single roll is made for the party, this could end up being a lot of rolls. I'm going to rule that if the party is not carrying illegal cargo or otherwise engaged in illegal activity, it is assumed that a check is failed, an investigation occurs, and nothing comes of it. If the party has illegal cargo, I'll be calling for daily checks. If the party buys illegal cargo and immediately leaves, I'll still require a roll for the final day. Given the party's notoriety, I'll be imposing penalties.

===Cabin layout and couples===
Since the question was asked, I'm going to slightly rearrange some of the rooms and doors and rule that some adjacent rooms have connecting doors next to the main door, so that high passenger couples can effectively have a large suite. In particular, on the left, the first room beneath the hatch is flipped vertically and a connecting door is added between that room and the one beneath it. On the right, the three room are a mirror image of the new configuration of the three on the left beneath the hatch.

===Limits on going faster or slower===
It is only possible to move up or down a maximum of three rows on the the time frames table. If jumping should take 10-60 seconds, there will be no further gain for dragging it out beyond six hours.

===Mega jump scars, astrogation, and jumping===
In a system marked with mega jump scars, there are typically several mega jump scars about the size of a planet. In systems marked with a category 2 jump scar, there are clouds of such scars; as with an asteroid belt, although the sum of the volume of the individual constituents is small, when treated as an extended object, the cloud is much large.

On the astrogation check, there is a -1 penalty if the target system has a mega jump scar that is trying to be avoided. This increases to a -2 if trying to jump into it. There is also a -2 for trying to jump from being within 100 diameters of a mega jump scar. On the J-drive check, the same penalties apply. These penalties are doubled for category 2 mega jump scars.

==Session 9: In which the party spend almost 50 days making almost two million credits==

Present: Feidlimid, Kyra, Artesia, Starcrash

On Mirage, the party quickly found a broker, bought some basic manufactured goods and recruited some legitimate doctors as high passengers.

They jumped to Ghost (0204), refueled, and successfully requested the berthing data for the Mare Vitae. The Mare Vitae had made an inaccurate jump, spent about five days crossing the system before refueling and then jumping. The insular dictatorship on Ghost forbade further contact with the locals and had the tech level to enforce this, so the party didn't push their luck.

The party then jumped to Spinning Skull (0203), a barren white rock. An inaccurate jump due to the jump scars cost them five and a half days. To try to avoid this, Starcrash, instead of spending the standard 10-60 seconds activating the jump drive, plunged the ship into twilight for six hours. There, they made a slightly late mortgage payment and a very early one. They refueled and recruited passengers, who were imperial agents, most of whom had colds and minor coughs. The local government was controlled by former executives from Lagging Skull, who had bought a few suits of battle dress, arrived, and imposed themselves as rules and then banned most tech to limit rebellion. The party spent 5 days finding a broker to sell their basic manufactured goods at a good profit. The heavy restrictions on the tech level of traded goods made it difficult to find any goods to purchase, but Starcrash used his streetwise skill to locate someone who sold them 5 tons of rhino horn extract (illegal biochemicals) and 20 tons of miscellaneous computer parts (advanced electronics, illegal on this world). Customs inspectors visited the ship shortly before it left, but Starcrash used some faked papers to convince them there was no need for an inspection.

The party then jumped to Lagging Skull (0303), another barren white rock. Lagging Skull was ruled by the Lagging Skull clothing corporation, who allowed visitors to operate essentially lawlessly beyond the corporate controlled headquarters. The party lost another four days to an inaccurate jump and then sold their rhino horn and computers, earning about half a million and a million in profits respectively on the transactions. They were unable to refuel, but picked up some textiles and polymers.

The party then jumped to Shimmer (0403), losing another four and a half days to an inaccurate jump because of the jump scars. While flying to Shimmer c, the main planet, they saw that the Wednesday evening Imperial Information Corporations investigative news hour was dedicated to a story by Interstellar Kate Adie about Hans Guo, his corruption and connections to the underworld, and the party's lifting him from Zhi Ren. Sometime was also given to the party's actions on Jevgeia. The local news in Shimmer identified their ship as being in the system, and the party repeatedly checked with the government whether any other procedures would need to be completed upon arrival and scanned for incoming police vessels. Despite assurances, and some sympathetic coverage, due to suspicion about the government of Zhi Ren, the party remained nervous. In honing his investigation skill, Starcrash discovered that four of their passengers were agents conspiring against the democratic government of Shimmer on behalf of one of the factions in Lagging Skull. Starcrash quickly reported them to the local police in an attempt to win favour with them. Given that they had earned significant funds from transporting criminals and fugitives in the past, Feidlimid was nervous about how past and potentially future clients might respond. Kyra said that it was the right thing to do, right now, and, as a pirate, that she didn't think of things beyond that.

Arising from events and discussion in this session, I will be posting house rules about the effect of jump scars on astrogation and jumping, on the maximum number of time increments that can be used to increase the speed of a task, on couples and the layout of cabins, and on checks and searches which might affect smuggling.

The following systems are known to have a mega jump scar. A "2" indicates that there is a particularly large or intense scar, even by the colossal standards of mega jump scars. Sector 0504 is known to have an ice crystal, possible formed from the interaction of asteroids and the jump crystal, which is very well formed and several thousand kilometers longs.

==Session 7: In which the party shrug off grenade blasts==

Present: Kyra, Artesia, Davon

Having arrived at Mirage b, the party use the local computer network to call their contact, Felicity Yonder. She advises them that, although it is illegal, it is easy to find a shuttle from the starport down to Smithsville, rent a vehicle, and drive 200km out to her dome. She further warned that Mirage b was fairly lawless. First, the party went to buy a pair of TL8 vacc suits, since that's the best available in the system, and then they followed Felicity's advice. In Smithsville, they rent a sealed ground car from Dorian McLaren's rental shop. Because of the vacuum on Mirage b, the party all wore vacc suits.

As their car passed under a bridge and made a sharp turn into a sunken road, Kyra realised that they were driving into an ideal spot for an ambush and spotted two bandits with a RAM grenade launcher and an assault rifle respectively. Davon used his military training to organise the party's response. Artesia quickly pulled off the road, unsuccessfully attempting to ram the bandit with the rocket launcher. Kyra drew her stunner and opened the passenger door. Davon drew his stunner. The bandits sprayed bullets and grenades in the general direction of the car. Although the assault rifle was ineffective, a grenade did serious damage to the car's wheels. (The heavy and low-TL vacc suits meant that Kyra, Davon, and the bandits took heavy encumbrance and vacc suit penalties, even if not totally untrained. Fortunately, the low gravity reduced the encumbrance penalties.) Artesia unsuccessfully tried to pull the car behind some rocks for cover, Kyra stunned the bandit with the assault rifle, and Davon used his leadership to improve his initiative. The remaining bandit fired another barrage of grenades, destroying the car's wheels and punching major holes in the body. The party barreled out of the car, with Artesia and Davon running toward the remaining bandit, and Kyra heading for the assault rifle. The bandit put another clip of grenades in his RAM. Artesia and Davon sprinted towards the bandit. Kyra grabbed the assault rifle and sprayed bullets at the bandit, clipping him once. The bandit fired a volley of grenades at Davon, but, fatigued, encumbered, and not fully proficient in his vacc suit, he missed wildly and mildly injured Artesia with the blast of a stray grenade. Artesia sprinted towards him again to get within the short range of her stunner, Davon ran perpendicularly to try to draw the bandit's fire, and Kyra managed to bring the bandit down with a final burst form the rifle. The party took the bandits' weapons, tied the surviving bandit to the roof of the bandits' car, tied their car behind the bandits', and then drove to the dome. Since the party had a Mad-Max aesthetic, with their burned-out car and prisoner strapped to the roof, and since they noticed the dome had a pulse laser in a turret on the roof, the party used the comm to announce their approach.

Felicity Yonder and her colleagues, Bliss Large and Hailey Sempiternity, welcomed the party to the dome. Inside the dome was a lush farm with waterfalls and large, two-story house. They discussed the missing Mare Vitae. Yonder gave the party a list of the crew on the Mare Vitae, a list of systems with mega jump scars and noted which were particularly large or intense, and a list of the known arrival dates for the Mare Vitae in various systems. The list started at around the start of the previous year and ended just before the middle of that year, when the ship arrived in 0604 (the Spirit system), which is a gateway to the lagging half of the sector. Yonder said that she thought the Mare Vitae was stuck in 0606, since 0606 is the only uninhabited system in the sector, and they'd have heard reports if it had been in any other system by now. She said Sempiternity thought the ship had suffered a misjump or got stuck in a void sector; Yonder thought this was unlikely, since the jump drive engineer was particularly good. There was a discussion of the dangers of jumping from in or near a mega jump scar. Large said she thought that the ship had been captured by aliens. Yonder said the Mare Vitae was a standard laboratory ship. Large said that it was an experimental research ship built by the military, that it had been provided through a series of front companies, that she had tried to scan it but found that it had special shielding making this impossible, although she had determined that it was 800-1000 tons in size. While arguing about this, Large referred to pictures that Louis (Morgonz) had sent to Sempiternity, in which one could see a swimming pool, which is not standard on a laboratory vessel. An examination of the Mare Vitae's route showed that it never went further than jump 1, while it is common knowledge that a standard laboratory ship has a jump 2 drive. Yonder said wealthy donours had paid for the ship. Yonder said the three scientists were astronomers and physicists. Large said one, Hia, was a biologist. The locals said it was quite unusual to see such heavily armed bandits in the area.

The party stayed in guest rooms overnight. They interrogated their prisoner. He revealed that he -Hunter Barick- and his partner -Graham Phillips- had been told of the party's wealth and route by someone selling them weapons. A rather vague description of the alleged informant/seller was given. He had supposedly said this in Damson's bar, a rough bar in Smithsville. Upon being told this, Large claimed it proved that "they" were trying to stop the party from investigating the Mare Vitae and had probably been tracking the party since Rekar or even earlier.

Artesia pondered whether someone could have hacked Yonder's communication system. She realised that the waterfall was really a cooling system for a large computer system, that the large crystals that their hosts wore were really high TL computer interfaces, and that the hosts were involved in complicated stellar scanning requiring advanced computers. Artesia concluded that anyone wanting to hack communication systems would probably have found it easier to hack the Logan Carpenter.

The party took a detour to return to Smithsville. They returned the burnt-out shell of the car they'd rented. They left the bandit's car, with the surviving bandit tied to its roof, down a nearby alleyway, and then called the police to report that Barick was a bandit. Kyra found Damson's bar was a real place and went in. With some prompting the bartender did remember seeing Kyra on the news for smuggling Hans Guo from Zhi Ren. Kyra told the bartender that if anyone asked about the party they should be told to back off. The party returned to the Logan Carpenter.

===Session 6: In which our heroes distribute medical supplies and rescue political dissidents===

Present: Starcrash, Artesia, Feidlimid, Davon

The party interviewed Artesia and recruited her as a pilot and jump drive engineer.

Feidlimid set his computerised suit to search for trade opportunities over night, but discovered in the morning that it had spent the whole night looking at a website that failed to load. A quick computers check reveals that the problem is that Supremo also ran the system-wide internet trading portals as well as the inter-system freight/brokering business. The whole party then spend several days searching for a broker. (The session was much delayed as the GM forgot the +6DM for being in a class A starport, which shifted the party's unskilled brokers from being essentially unable to find a broker to easily being able to do so.) Feidlimid's computer agent was able to locate a broker after 3 days. The party sold their consumables and organs from Jevgia and bought some medical computers. With their MoST certification, they also signed up to haul 50 tons of freight. They also converted 20 tons of cargo space to an extended fuel tank. Starcrash used his streetwise skill to recruit passengers; with a large number of available high passengers and not quite enough low passengers to fill all the berths, Starcrash used his persuasion and Davon's excellent medical reputation to convert some excess high passengers to low passengers. The party recruited 20 low passengers and 6 high passengers. Most of the high passengers were business people who had skirted the law in leaving Zhi Ren, but one, Lo Fan, had a three-dot tattoo above his right eyebrow. Following Bill Clinton's maxim of "Don't ask; don't tell", the party didn't ask if this had any significance and didn't learn it was typically associated with the Zhi Ren triads or that Jack Jack Jack was normally called Triad Jack. Lo Fan recommended that the party contact Jack Jack Jack in Zhi Ren to recruit more passengers.

The oppressive dictatorship on Zhi Ren c forbade direct contact with the surface but allowed ships to dock and trade with their primitive star port. Most of the population of Zhi Ren was forced to leave in polluted factory-bunkers on the surface, but some wealthy citizens were allowed to live in the space port or on separate orbital platforms. Off-world information and technology were banned.

The party successfully jumped to Zhi Ren, 0105 in the Little Rift PMR sector. Artesia and Davon spent the day thawing out the low passengers, all of whom survived. Feidlimid went to the bank, and '''the party's second mortgage payment was made'''. Feidlimid also surprised the local bank manager by reporting that the party had successfully obtained a MoST. He then spent much of the rest of the day looking finding a hospital, some medical clinics, and some illegal doctors. Santini used his streetwise skill to establish contact with Jack Jack Jack. The following day Artesia and Davon unsuccessfully spent the day trying to sell their probably illegal medical computers. Meanwhile, Feidlimid and Starcrash used their contacts with Jack Jack Jack to sell their illegal medical computers for an enormous profit, grossing two million credits, of which about MCr1.6 was profit. They also recruited 20 low passengers -mostly low level triads looking to escape Zhi Ren- and agreed to transport 6 high passengers from a nearby orbital platform to Mirage. The high passengers were Agent Ji, Hans Guo, and their 4 body guards.

On the night 60, the party flew to the Elysium-style orbital platform, an opulent ring with an atmosphere held in by highwalls around the edge and centrifugal forces. Artesia failed her pilot check, hit several trees and dug the landing gear solidly into the ground. Davon's military tactics allowed him to quickly assess that there were multiple, independent factions responding in different ways. The home owners guards were trying to protect the house and the party goers, security guards and notable party goers were fleeing and taking cover, one group of six was racing towards the ship, and their were probably police some distance away also coming to investigate. Feidlimid's sensors confirmed that a police cutter was launching from the far end of the orbital platform. Santini was able to open the cargo bay doors, five of the passengers ran on board, and the sixth expertly drove a large air raft up into the cargo bay. Artesia struggled to dislodge the ship from being dug into the ground. Fortunately, first Davon and then Starcrash were able to hail the police cutter and convince them that there was some sort of medical emergency. Rather than immediately attacking, the police ordered the party to remain on the ground and wait for ground police and ambulances to arrive. Eventually, Artesia was able to get the Logan Carpenter to fly and then dodged the police's beam lasers, while Santini quickly ran the astrogation programme and activated the jump drive. (The GM goofed on the 100-diameter rule, which may need some ret-conn.)

In the confusion, the party misjumped, arriving four days from their target of Mirage b. Hans Guo revealed he was now on the run because he had politically damaging evidence of the corruption of Zhi Ren's corrupt President Zheng. Feidlimid made politely minor enquiries about this and was surprised to then spend much of the trip being told about various kick-back schemes the President and his allies were alleged to be involved in. Midway through their trip to Mirge b, Hans Guo's yacht docked with the Logan Carpenter, and the passengers paid double the normal rate. Upon arriving on Mirage b, the party thawed their low passengers, two of whom died. They delivered their freight and refueled and prepared to go meet their contacts from the alien-hunting Xenology society.

===Session 5: In which the party dispense justice, loose a friend, and learn of a missing ship===

Present: Starcrash, Kyra, Logan, Feidlimid, Davon

After their mistrial, the party were allowed to return to their ship, where Davon was able to quickly heal the injured members of the party. Afterward, Feidlimid and Kyra spent the night going from bar to bar spreading rumours that Gene Superior was responsible for arranging the nuclear weapons. The party also report this to a group of young police invsetigators.

Steve Temptation was accused of an extremely serious crime, whereas the rest of the party was involved in an administrative dispute about the impounding of their ship, so the Jevgians now ruled that Mr Temptation should be tried separately.

The party were retried. Having had some additional time to strategise and the luxury of choosing their style of trial by combat, Feidlimid insisted on zero-G combat. Unprepared, the GM simply repurposes the original arena, rather than designing a zero-G arena, and simply imposes a -2DM on characters without the vacc suit skill, rather than imposing any exciting effects; something will appear in the house rule section, but the zero-G combat was flatter than it should have been. Feidlimid and Agent Santini spoke against the Technark, warning of an older crowd. This both riled the crowd and distracted one of the prosecutors from joining the fight until it was essentially finished. Kyra and Feidlimid being skilled in zero-G combat were at a significant advantage and were able to batter the prosecutors into unconsciousness. Before they were able to finish this, some lucky blows from Assistant Justice Divine Perfect killed Logan Carpenter.

Following the fight, Feidlimid challenged the Technark, Gene Superior, to one-on-one combat. With rumours circulating and the crowd riled, and just generally believing in ritual combat, Gene Superior accepted and selected to fight with broad swords. Feidlimid won initiative. Each combatant inflicted one serious blow with the broad sword in the first round. In the second round, Feidlimid hit Gene Superior a second time, slaying him.

With the head of government dead and the population angered, the police quickly escorted the party off the Jevgian station. They reported that shortly before the trial had started an imperial naval vessel had returned and reported that there had not been an alien invasion after all. The Jevgians accepted that the party had won their trial by combat and paid to refuel the ship and compensation for impounding the ship. The party were unhappy that Logan had been killed over such a trivial matter and spent the journey to Rekar in mourning. '''The party renamed their ship the Logan Carpenter in his honour.'''

The jump to Rekar was successful, so the party arrived near High-Orbit Castle. This space station had once been a massive naval base on the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montr%C3%A9al%E2%80%93Mirabel_International_Airport | Mirabel] corridor, but was now mostly abandoned with vast sections depressurised. Davon was able to successfully thaw all eleven of the low passengers. The party received an invitation to Logan and his friends to meet Admiral Lorval Tansen at a restaurant called "The Edge of The Void". The party went to the Ministry of Space Transport, and the silver-tongued Starcrash was able to persuade the bureaucrats there to grant the ship a standard, one-year MoST registration, instead of a temporary permit, despite the missing air raft.

"The Edge of The Void" was an upscale restaurant. The name was a play on words, referring both to Rekar being on the edge of the Little Rift and to the restuarant itself overlooking an abandoned and depressurised hanger. The party knew Logan had been affiliated to Admiral Tansen through his investigation of alien life. Admiral Tansen told the party that a ship, the Mare Vitae, had been missing for about a year in the Little Rift. The ship had been investigating alien life and mega jump scars. The admiral said he was affiliated with societies investigating alien life, and they would pay Cr450,000 to learn what had happened to the Mare Vitae. Rather bargaining for a better price or asking how much the party would receive for recovering the Mare Vitae and its crew, Feidlimid claimed that the emperor had created the mega jump scars, despite evidence that the mega jump scars are at least millions of years old.

==Session 4: In which the party faces a trial over compensation for having their ship impounded and smuggling nuclear weapons==

Present: Feidlimid, Logan, Steve, Starcrash

On Grenaenuros, the party meet an old acquaintance, Steve Temptation, and hire him as a jump drive engineer. The party debate reneging on their commitment to ferry passengers to Erobquzedoia, since it is an awful backwater, but eventually decide to stick with their original plan. To save time -and hence money- they filled half the hold with additional fuel canisters. Unable to find machine parts, they purchase basic electronics. Steve -on a totally lawless, opulently wealthy, TL14 station crawling with criminals- decides to buy two briefcase nuclear weapons.

Steve signed up to the marines but was immediately bullied out by Alexander Haig (the dice fall where they fall). He joined the navy but soon was for out for causing an accident that killed several fellow crew members. He then served three terms in the scouts, rapidly being promoted. The most notable event was unsuccessfully trying to rescue survivors from another crashed ship, earning him the enmity of their commander.

Steve decided not to take extra time operating the jump drive, and the ship misjumped, arriving 5.5 days from the only inhabited planet. The party flew to the planet, radioed other ships to say they were landing, and then landed. Erobquzedoia is ruled by a TL 3 (flintlock) bureaucracy forcing their subjects to live in a TL 1 (bronze age) society. Starcrash convinced the locals to allow the party to explore a little around the capital city. After a false start, the party found a buyer paying a good price for their locally illegal gameboys and radios, illegally recruited travelers trying to escape to Javgeia, dumped their fuel tanks in the desert, and flew off. By the time the party left, they had the only ship on Erobquzedoia, as no new ships had arrived for 3 days.

Another misjump left the party three days from the starport. While in jump space, they learned that one of the new passengers was, in fact, one of the clones from Jevgeia and intended to smuggle friends out of the system before their mandatory euthanasia at 35; the party indicated their willingness to illegally smuggle people out of the system. The party learned that police cruisers were coming to escort them to the starport. They spoke with the Jevgeian Technarc, Gene Superior who demanded they fly to the starport where their ship would be impounded because of some crisis. Desperately, short on fuel, the party were unable to resist his demand to land on the starport. Jevgeian men wore leather trousers, and the women wore leather leotards; both typically carried cutlasses.

Casually leaving the docking bay with a briefcase nuclear bomb in each hand, Steve triggered an array of sirens. Steve and Starcrash allowed themselves to be arrested by soldiers with assault rifles as well as sabers, and Starcrash convinced the soldiers that he believed the weapons had been brought with the approval of the Jevgian leadership. Feidlimid and Logan were escorted to military barracks, where they spent the night reading the local internet. In addition to the news of the nuclear weapons, they found that no new ships had arrived in the system for almost two weeks. Jevgia has a population of only 43,000 and is largely but not fully self sufficient, so this was primarily a source of intrigue, rather than a crisis. A ship had left for Rekar 11 days earlier but not yet returned. Some thought that Rekar had been destroyed by an extra galactic alien invasion via the Little Rift, where the enormous and otherwise unexplained jump scars indicated historic intergalactic travel. Of these, some thought the aliens intended to destroy all of humanity, whereas others thought that the genetically superior clones of Jevgeia would make natural allies for the aliens, who were clearly clones as well. Others thought that the Imperium had collapsed, perhaps because it was run by inferior nonclones, it had failed to appoint an emperor, or some combination of these factors. Feidlimid and Logan fairly easily managed to get Steve and Starcrash bailed, and the party reunited in the morning.

'''The party immediately went to the bank to make their first mortgage payment.'''

While doing so, they politely agreed that an alien invasion had probably destroyed Rekar but would recognise the superiority of and form an alliance with a small station of TL 7 clones. They then went to launch a legal appeal to have their ship returned to them. Steve also requested to have his hideously illegal nuclear bombs returned. The Technarc disparaged bureaucratic evidence-based justice system.

The party found themselves engaged in trial by combat that afternoon. While Steve and Starcrash were skilled with guns, heavy weapons, and explosives, they had no melee combat skills; Feidlimid was not particularly talented either. The Prosecution looked to thoroughly trounce the party, before one of Feidlimid's drones swooped in, causing the Technarc to declare a mistrial.

==Session 3: In which the party repeatedly avoid fighting gangsters with fully automatic grenade launchers==

Present: Davon, Feidlimid, and Logan

Feidlimid set his hand-held computer and automated suit to search online for available cargo overnight. In the morning, they reported some prospector was claiming to sell 3 tons of alien life, another trader had 50 tons of cattle in cryoberths, and someone selling vehicles. The party went to inspect the alien life, which were methane-based prokaryotes --primitive, single-celled organisms based on liquid methane instead of water. Logan's knowledge of biology, from his experience investigating alien life, revealed that such samples are very rare, but widely known to exist by those interested in such questions and that investigating these would not revolutionise humanities understanding of the universe. The prospector had bought some samples from some researchers who extracted the samples. He was initially asking for Cr200,000/ton and dropped to Cr150,000/ton as the party was leaving, although he wasn't willing to accept Feidlimid's offer of Cr50,000/ton. The party then went to inspect the live animals, which were 50 tons of cattle in cryoberths. Using Feidlimid's experience of farming, he was able to check the quality of the cattle and boost his negotiations. The party bought 25 tons (i.e. 25 cows) at Cr8,500 each.

The party returned to their ship, where the weapons turret was being installed at an average speed, and the engineer said it would take an additional day and a half to finish. Davon's RAM (automatic grenade launcher) arrived, and another, larger package arrived for "Charlie Charlie" with four more. The low passengers arrived and were frozen. Two of the high passengers arrived, and, in game, a three-way argument arose between the passengers, the party, and engineers about when the ship would leave and the installation would be completed. This was partially resolved by having the ship delayed one night, the passengers getting to bring some extra cargo, and --most importantly-- the GM checking the rules and finding the day/million credit of construction assumes an average shipyard, instead of the particularly sophisticated one on Proximus d. The party adeptly kept the RAMs from the passengers until the delayed launch was largely resolved. The passengers returned late at night with 10 tons of cargo. Feidlimid's surveillance droid "Theresa" scanned it, and Feidlimid recognised there were 7 tons of basic electronics and 3 tons of illegal cybernetics, but the agent in his computer failed to recognise the disguised cybernetics and recorded 10 tons of basic electronics. The party flew out of the dock, plotted a course meticulously carefully to get a +2, engaged the engines, and successfully jumped to the next system, Grenaeruros.

The four high passengers were Charles "Charlie Charlie" Charleston, Ron "Weasely" Wozel, "Heavy" Mike, and "Fat Neck" Rick. The last three had visible tattoos across the tops of their heads; the first, their boss, had thick hair. Poor investigation rolls merely revealed that large head tattoos are often associated with organised crime. The passengers spent late nights drinking, with "Heavy" Mike and "Fat Neck" Rick drinking until 5. Logan, hoping to develop his carousing skill, stayed up with them and was present when an argument about a love triangle broke out between them. "Fat Neck" Rick threatened to kill "Heavy" Mike. Fortunately, with some lucky initiative rolls and superior skill in unarmed combat, Logan was able to hold "Fat Neck" back and persuade him that what happened wasn't worth fighting over. "Heavy" Mike managed to flee and break into the cargo hold, but -with "Fat Neck" restrained- he was persuaded by Feidlimid not to flee into the engine room. Multiple successful grapples again prevented a RAM fight.

The party arrived successfully at Grenaururos. The high passengers disembarked. Daven took extra time to carefully thaw the low passengers. His skill and care meant that he didn't even need to roll for ten of the passengers, and that he handily revived the entire, sickly Miggins family. Feidlimid again used his expert farming skills to boost his negotiation, allowing the party to sell their cryo cows for Cr 12,500 each, making a total profit of Cr100,000 on the cows alone in their first ten days of Travelling. The party's spirits were buoyed by their confidence they'd be able to make their first month's mortgage payment. They decided to head to the harsh desert world of Erobquzadeia and recruited 4 middle passengers for this.

===Some house rules and corrections from this session===
The standard modifier for using a computer to track goods without a supremo account is -3.

The alien life were methane-based prokaryotes not eukaryotes.

"Live animal" cargo is assumed to be kept in cryoberths, to avoid exhausting the ships life-support.

The one day per million credits of ship upgrades is an average and not the fastest possible in a well equipped station.

Present; Davon, Feidlimid, Kyra, Logan, and Starcrash.

The party left the main Proximus d branch of Ninth Galactic Bank. Bank manager Frederich Oval had suggested finding a place to stay, maybe exploring the nightlife, going to the shipyard in the morning, returning to sign the paperwork, taking care of galactic registration (aka space MoT), and signing up with freight brokers Supremo, so they can be out hauling freight the next day. The time being 16.45, it was too late to visit the shipyard, so the party did some shopping. Feidlimid gave Davon, Logan, and Santini kCr10 each for sundries and went to spend kCr60 on computers and chips. Kya bought some armoured clothing. Starcrash went to buy weapons accessories. Davon unsuccessfully tried to buy medical equipment. The party returned to the TAS lodge and decided to stay in at night, being being responsible people with plans. Feidlimid used his computer to track down a weapons trader and sent a message.

The next morning, the party went to the shipyard to look yard, where Sven Eriksson showed them the ship. Davon asked if any previous lady pilots had damaged the ship while docking; Kyra, being a lady and the only competent pilot in the party managed to extract an apology. Feidlimid gave Starcrash his bank card and a shopping list. Starcrash and Davon went shopping, including arranging cyberware, buying everything on Feidlimid's list and kCr30 of other good stuff. Feidlimid and Kyra successfully made engineering and sensors rolls to find damage to the thrusters and the sensors. Feidlimid asks Sven about replacing the sensors, since its only kCr50. (The GM pauses to check the rules on the penalties for old ships. It doesn't seem right that the party can get 1d6% off the cost of the ship just for having damaged sensors that can be fixed for next to nothing, but the party have still to learn the real problem with the ship, so he decides to let this go.) Sven told Feidlimid and Kyra that some military guy had come around asking about Logan and Davon. The party had lunch with a weapons trader, arrange a dubious deal to have a slug rifle put in their TAS storage, and advised to avoid the rift since the sparse population makes it difficult to profitable trade. They then spent the afternoon buying more gear, including a broadsword for Davon and cyberware for Feidlimid, only realising in the early evening that they'd forgotten to return to the bank.

The party had dinner and then went out at night to see if they could arrange to buy some more weapons. Walking through a back tunnel after arranging a deal on a laser, they ran into Logan and Carpenter's rival, the bullying Colonel Alexander Haig, with a marine saber on his belt, his arms around to women, and two thuggish marines flanking him. Haig insulted Logan and Carpenter. Starcrash replied "You 'ladies' should be carefully, because these gentlemen all have herpes", provoking one of the marines to take a swing at him, and starting combat before either side remembered to roll recon to look for concealed weapons or other useful information. Haig successfully used tactics to boost his groups initiative, but the party failed to. A few rounds of combat followed. Notable events included a marine driving his fist ineffectually into Starcrash's armour, Feidlimid drawing his stunner and missing widely, Kyra trying to draw her sword from inside her bag, Haig chopping Kyra down in one blow, Starcrash convincing one of the stupid thugs to try to stop Haig or face the years in prison or the death penalty, one of the women surprising the party with a stunner and the skill to use it -quickly bringing down Feidlimid and then Starcrash when he picked up Feidlimid's stunner-, and Davon taking a few saber blows and declaring he'd been ready for a brawl not a shoot out and withdrawing. Colonel Haig, with int 5, unsuccessfully tried to make a pun on Rushmore and rushing away. The stunned characters awoke a few minutes later, and Davon returned within five minutes so that he could effectively administer first aid to everyone else. The station police arrived a few minutes later looking to arrest the party, since Haig had already reported they attacked him. They made some good rolls and were able to get the police to think their story was as credible as Haig's, despite his much higher social standing. The police were able to retrieve Feidlimid's stolen drone, with just the few minutes of footage around the time of the fight deleted, from a computer shop a few hours later. Agent Through (badge #52) told the party even if their version of events was true, they'd probably not win in court, because of Haig's high status, so they were lucky he was willing to let it go, and they should do likewise. Starcrash finished his night's work of sourcing an automatic grenade launcher, and the party went out to buy stunners first thing in the morning.

The party signed the paperwork to trade in their shipshares and take out a mortgage on the Beowolf in the morning. Feidlimid and Kyra agreed to accept their remaining bank balance in cash when the ship left Proximus d. Davon, the only party member he wasn't able to heal, stayed home to rest. Kyra went to register with Supremo, but found she couldn't because the Beowolf didn't have its galactic registration. Feidlimid used his streetwise skill to recruit numerous low berth passengers and four high-passage passengers for a station one parsec over; they were happy not to ask about galactic registration, since he wasn't asking too many questions either. Agent Santini "I don't roll under 13 on 2d6" Santini went to the galactic registration, quickly got a meeting agent Anna Cruise, learned that a MCr1.4 rescue air-raft was listed as officially part of the Beowolf's manifest and that the Beowolf couldn't legally take passengers, haul freight, or trade cargo without it, and was issued with a temporary permit allowing these activities while the Beowolf returned to the regional administration in High-Orbit Castle on the edge of the Little Rift; "Bye, Anna" he said as he left, breezing past the people waiting all day for an appointment and then day-after-day for paperwork to be processed in complicated cases. In the afternoon, Kyra found that the temporary permit still wasn't good enough to sign up with Supremo. Eventually, Feidlimid, Starcrash, and Davon were able to talk to Frederich Oval about the situation, who told them that everything had been in the paperwork and that they'd have to go to High-Orbit Castle and then across Little Rift to retrieve the air raft. Davon regretted that no one in the party had the Admin skill to notice this earlier. Mr Oval said the party should have expected there'd be three things wrong on a ship that was 30 years old.

The session ended in the early evening in game time. The Beowolf's passengers will be arriving the following afternoon. The party was hoping to try to find some freight or cargo overnight or in the morning and then head out.

===Politics===
Q: Who is the Emperor?

A: News takes decades to reach Spinward Little Rift from the core. As far as in known, the Third Imperium remains a constitutional imperium, ruled by an imperial court. There has not been an emperor for nearly two centuries. At many time and in many places, there has been a movement to create some form of republic. Most planets and systems have democratic governments, and most sectors are organised as loose federations, although there are numerous variations.

Q: What is the political situation on Earth?

A: What's the political situation in Babylon? The Sol system, and most of the surrounding systems, are heavily polluted and have had much of their natural resources depleted. They are under direct rule by the Third Imperium. The primary economic activity is tourism, but even this is limited given the enormous travel times in the Traveller universe. A particularly notable event in the long and now ancient decline of the Sol system was military occupation by the then military government of Alpha Centauri.

===Nonhuman activity in the galaxy===
Q: Are there aliens?

A: There is no widely accepted evidence of alien life. In this Traveller universe, the overwhelming majority of systems in the galaxy do not have planets with liquid surface water, and, of the planets that did oce have surface water, the water has usually been gone for billions of years. (To the best of my knowledge, there is not yet clear information about this in the real universe.) There does not seem to be any life that evolved in other systems. There are about a hundred billion systems in the galaxy, and there has not been an attempt to search for life on the majority of them. There are a few hundred known cases where there are not only clear signs of complicated organic chemistry for hundreds of millions of years but also some indications that there were once eukaryotic (without organelles) cells.

Q: What are von Neumann garbage and terramold?

A: One factor contributing to the difficulty in searching for alien life is the widespread presence of von Neumann garbage and terramold. A von Neumann machine is a machine that is capable of replicating itself. In the early phases of the development of jump drives, numerous von Neumann machines were built for mining systems many parsecs away. Many of these were poorly designed and quickly spread to systems far beyond those they were intended to reach. Although von Neumann garbage is usually fairly easy to remove from inhabited systems, it is believed to have reached every system in the galaxy and to be prevalent in the three quarters of the galaxy that has not been colonised by humans.

Terramold refers to a wide class of hardy fungi that have been genetically engineered for use in terraforming. Typically, they will reproduce both by budding, allowing them to fill densely a region growing at a few meters a week in water or open ground and also by spores so that every few weeks a new colony might successfully be started tens or hundreds of kilometers away. Many species were engineered to take many different forms so that they can survive in a vast range of temperatures and pressures. The most potent terramolds can cover most of a planet in a few years and transform its atmosphere within a few decades. Early terraforming projects combined von Neumann machines and terramold so that distant systems could be made almost habitable while humans spent decades travelling to them. Von Neumann garbage with an attached terramold is believed to have now terraformed every moon and planet in the galaxy that can be terraformed. Except for a very small number of moons explored shortly after the development of jump drives, every celestial body with a significant amount of water was terraformed by von Neumann garbage and terramold long before humans reached it.

Q: What about paleo jump scars and mega jump scars?

A: The activation of a jump drive leaves an easily detected residue, known as a jump scar. It is dangerous to jump to or from a jump scar. Longer jumps by larger ships typically leave a larger scar, although more advanced drives often leave a smaller scar than those of an equivalent-sized ship traveling an equivalent distance. Jump-drive failures, both those that destroy ships and those that send then dozens of parsecs in a random direction, leave still larger scars. (Efforts to develop a jump-7 or jump-8 drive have largely been replaced by efforts to control the direction and safety of failed jumps that go for ten to twenty parsecs.) There are several regions of the galaxy with evidence of jump scars that clearly predate human jump-drive technology (paleo jump scars) and jump scars that are millions of times larger than those created by even the largest ships (mega jump scars). The source of these is unknown. Paleo and mega jump scars can be found in the Little Rift.

==Background==
After many years of work, the party have decided to cash in their ship shares, take out a mortgage on a Free Trader (or similar), and see what adventures find them as they haul goods from one star system to another.

===This Traveller universe: ===

The jump drive remains the defining technology of Traveller. Beyond that and the associated two-dimensional hex-grid, this campaign has a slightly harder sci-fi setting: there is no widely accepted evidence of aliens or psionics.

Spaceship crews have three main sources of revenue. They can take passengers, either as passengers or suspended in cryoberths, they can ship freight for other people, and, if they have their own money, they can also buy cargo in one system to sell in another. Some crews may attract the attention of patrons who hire them for particular tasks. In more remote regions, there may be opportunities for salvage, but travelling through such regions often involves fighting off pirates and other thieves.

===Time and Distance: ===
Jump drives are the only known form of faster than light travel. They shift spaceships to hyperspace for a week and then return the ship to normal space, some distance away. The fastest military and corporate ships have a range of 6pc (parsecs). Small systems often only receive supplies from private trade-ships with a range of 1pc. In many ways, this makes the Traveller universe like the age of sail.

===The Third Imperium:===
Traveller is set in the space 1970s: space Bretton Woods has established a universally convertible currency, those who work in an industry for 20 years will get a pension, and the Third Imperium maintains a merchant marine.

The Third Imperium is a network of interconnected systems stretching from a cluster at the galactic core out to the galactic rim and forming a wedge containing about a quarter of the galaxy. The Milky Way has a diameter of 30kpc. Even if it was worth sending the fastest ships, it would take about a century for a message to travel from one end of the galaxy to the other. Within the Imperium are numerous smaller political units, typically a few tens of parsecs in diameter. Each system typically has its own legal system, which is typically coordinated at the regional level.

The currency of the Third Imperium is the credit, denoted Cr or c. Official documents are usually printed in Corish and the dominant or official language of the region. Away from the core, particularly populous planets are often self sufficient, and may have their own distinct legal systems, languages, and currencies.

The Imperium maintains large armies which are mainly positioned to either deter attacks from regions that have separated or to prevent warfare between regions. At any given time, there are usually some regions at war with the Imperium, including both regions with coherent governments and regions that have collapsed into piracy, but communication is so slow that these wars are usually over by the time news of them reaches the core. The Imperium maintains a merchant marine to supply its armed forces.

Outside the Third Imperium, the galaxy is largely uninhabitated.

===Ships, banks, ship shares: ===
Traders will typically own shares of their ship and have to pay monthly payments to a bank on the remaining portion. Ship ownership is divided into between 90 and 100 shares, depending on age and condition of the ship. Banks require payment of 1/240th of the original loan per month for forty years.

Because of the difficulty in planning when communication is so slow, and because banks want to be governed by favourable laws, only in a small proportion of systems is it possible to arrange a loan on a ship. Banks do not accept early repayment to reduce the overall amount paid. Ships with loans on them cannot be sold. Ship shares can only be traded with a bank according to its peculiar rules and cannot be traded with third parties.

===The Spinward Little Rift Region: ===
The Little Rift is a region of somewhat unusually low system density. (The Great Rift is a famous Traveller region that is very large and also has unusually low density.) Forward in the direction of rotation of the galaxy is the region of Spinward Little Rift; behind, is Lagging Little Rift.

Rif'in is the main language in both Spinward and Lagging Little Rift. Spinward Little Rift is generally a safe and well governed region. Although some cities might have disreputable parts, and some isolated areas of some planets might only rarely see patrols, crime is generally low. For decades, there have been reports from the core that the Galactic Senate will reorganise the Imperium as a republic. As has become common in most regions, freight movements are typically brokered by Supremo corporation.

The Hanrahan corridor -a chain of space stations for refueling multimillion ton, jump 5, capital ships- runs through Spinward Little Rift. Proximus d is one of the stations on the Hanrahan corridor. This traffic has made Proximus d a hub for the nearest half subsector. Two million people live aboard this crowded station. Although the Proximus system is remote, loose regulation and infrastruture for ship maintenance have made it one of the few places where Ninth Galactic Bank transfers ship ownership.

It is a demon-bane weapon, which increases the critical range against demons by 1, and which can send a demon back to its home plane with a successful hit unless it makes a DC 20 Will save. Its special purpose is to aid the ambitious, and whenever it drops a foe, it grants another attack on the nearest creature, be it friend or foe (the wielder may make a DC 15 Will save to resist). It calls the ambitious to it with its empathic communication – and it always calls thus to the ambitious, leading its wielder into a never-ended stream of conflict. | [[Kith]] Bestial tribesfolk of the Purple Planet. While over 6’ in height, their broad shoulders and round bellies lend the appearance of squat, brutish forms. Pale-skinned, their eyes range from ice blue to bone, while their hair is most often white or a sickly yellow. Ursine in appearance, the kith are unexpectedly quick and far stronger than most humans. They decorate their pale bodies with colorful dyes. The kith dress in the scraped hides of their foemen, hung with laces of rotting ears and fingers – grisly trophies cut from their enemies. Most wield stone-tipped spears and clubs in battle.

* Kith culture and beliefs
** Tattoos serve as a record of a kith’s life and protection against evil spirits.
** Slain enemies may only be looted or harvested by the slayer.
** Eating the flesh of your kills is somehow important.
** Breaking a taboo must be punished by death.
** Tattoos with swirling symbols but also numbers seeming to represent clans. Numbers maybe both tallies or numerals.
** Clans numbered 2 and 4 are known to exist.
** Clan 2 appears to want to carry their dead to the mountains.
** Capable of building a palisade in the mushroom forest and planning long distance travels.
